Linux

Following the most recent distribution update on Distrowatch – for the past 12 months, the statistics have barely changed and continues to be mostly in the favor of the better known operating system that have been around for a very long time.

Surprisingly, over 170 distributions are still on the waiting list; and quite a handful of these are even dating back to as far as five years ago, interestingly enough, some of these distros have actually gained a reasonable traction. Which proves that a distro is not necessarily bad or unworthy if it doesn’t get or hasn’t gotten the approval of Distrowatch.
It is important to know that although the top dogs – UbuntuLinux Mint will always be there and maybe unmovable for now, you mustn’t disregard distros that have and show great potential.
If you remember the story of eOS – well if not – the OS pretty much took off a few years back (2011) and managed to gain the attention of the industry especially because it presented something that was radically different from the mainstream offerings.
Well, such isn’t the case for many new distros but if you’ve been around in Linux land for a while now, you’ll be well aware that the rate at which devs are churning out distros has pretty much reduced compared to the way it was – say a decade or so back.
With most distributions released nowadays, is an exceptional offering/feature(s) – most at times – that makes it stand out amongst the crowd. Such is the case of those listed down below.
It is particularly difficult handpicking distributions to look out for in 2016, cause, to be honest, they are all great in their little ways with some meant for all and others offering features targeted at a particular set of users – which is why we’ll continually update this article as needed.
As usual, we at TecMint will always have your best interest at heart. Without much ado, let’s quickly delve into our pick for the year 2016.

1. VeltOS

I like to attribute Linux with the saying by the community, for the community! You don’t necessarily have to agree with me but technically, it is what it is.
VeltOS by Velt technologies is an operating system that is birth to take a rather unusual approach to Linux – particularly in the sense that it’s going to an entirely driven community project. The devs will pretty much let you decide what and what not you will like to see or rather not see in the operating system.

VeltOS Applications
This I like to call clean politics (if you may) or rather, pure FOSS. VeltOS is giving power to its users to shape up the operating to what they want it to be, the feature base and everything else is entirely community dependent.
You will pretty much decide what the operating system will look, act, and feel like in a voting platform. You can pretty much create a new poll requesting a feature or asking one to be removed. Whatever Velt shapes up to be is entirely in your hands.
